Curious what lies beyond the easy-to-reach shooting locations? The striking beauty of the Tetons is impossible to ignore and extends all the way around the spectacular mountain range. Join photographer Mandy Lea as we venture to some of her favorite places that require a little more effort to reach than the typical photographer is willing to exert.

These Adventure Days will include strenuous uphill hikes around 5+ miles while carrying all of our camera gear. Please be honest about your physical fitness level when considering this workshop. Getting to these spots won’t be easy, but the views (and the photos) will be totally worth it!

Of course, we’ll shoot sunrise and sunset, but we’ll also get away from the parking lots and explore some of the best that the area has to offer. June is a great time of year with the lingering snow on the high peaks rapidly melting; creating rushing streams and beautiful wildflowers throughout the area. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even see some wildlife!

Throughout the workshop there will be plenty of opportunities in the field to photograph the beautiful mountain landscapes. Our limited class size allows students to receive more personalized instruction from Mandy. Lastly, a final day image review session with other students will give interesting insight into how different people photography the same locations.

If you prefer to ease into the Adventure Days then consider adding on the the Grand Teton Photo Classics, where we’ll photograph all of the iconic easy-to-reach spots in and around Grand Teton National Park. The Adventure Days workshop can be added onto the Grand Teton Photo Classics at a discounted rate ($299) or taken as a standalone workshop ($349). When signing up for BOTH workshops, use coupon code “TetonCombo”.

Workshop Size Limit – 8  Note: The group size is being limited to eight participants to ensure each student gets an appropriate amount of instruction both in the field and with reviewing/editing images.

Camera gear to bring:

  • Camera (DSLR)
  • Lenses (primarily wide angle, wide-mid zoom)
  • Memory Cards & Readers
  • Batteries & Chargers
  • Tripod
  • Laptop (for image review)
  • Backpack to carry camera gear to shooting locations
  • Cable release or intervalometer (recommended)

Other Things to Consider:

Transportation: Most of our driving will be on pavement. However, some shooting locations may be on somewhat rough dirt roads that may be a bit too much for low-clearance 2WD cars.

Altitude: We will be doing strenuous activities at elevations between 6-10k feet during this workshop. Everyone’s body reacts to the effects of elevation differently. Some people have no problems at all, while others struggle. The most common symptoms of altitude sickness are headaches, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. There are over-the-counter medicines to help alleviate these symptoms. The most important thing is to stay hydrated and avoid overuse of alcohol if you’re not used to the effects of altitude.

Physical Fitness: These are called Adventure Days for a reason. Almost all hiking trails in this area involve some steep uphills. We’ll be hiking around 5+ miles per day and carrying all of our camera gear along the way. The terrain may be rocky, uneven, and steep. So, comfortable hiking shoes/boots are recommended. Trekking poles are also very useful for the steep up and downhill hikes.

Weather: Temperatures can vary greatly in the Tetons during the summer months. The morning and evening temperatures can be downright cold. It is strongly recommended to bring warm gear (gloves, hats, warm coats, water/windproof jackets, warm pants, base layer pants, etc.) and dress in layers if you are not used to mountain weather. The sun is also much stronger at higher elevations than most people are used to experiencing—WEAR SUNSCREEN! Bug spray is also highly recommended. Mosquitos can be bad around the Tetons.

Insurance: Travel insurance and/or refundable tickets are highly encouraged as weather or other factors may cause last minute changes or cancellations to the workshop.

Recommended Accommodations: Lodging reservations are the responsibility of each attendee. To ensure you have a place to stay, please make reservations when completing workshop registration. Jackson, WY is a busy town in the summer and things fill fast!
